You probably won't need these abilities or items much in the beginning, but they'll be necessary as songs become faster and more technical. The more you use certain characters, the more they level up and learn more skills. Rather than taking to the field of battle, though, you use these abilities and objects to master tough songs or win special rewards.

"Curtain Call" is set in the "Final Fantasy" universe, so it has the usual RPG elements, including magic, special skills and helpful items. You'll have plenty of work to do building up your team for these quests, but you'll have a blast while doing it. Quests vary from short to long and require characters varying from beginners to seasoned pros. You form a party, drop down on a map and take off on a journey, playing songs along the way. Quests are the biggest - and most interesting - change from the original game. You can play songs from any game one at a time, or you can tackle a more in-depth quest. The songs still have their old-school vibe, with just enough added instrumentation to give them a glossy new sheen. These are beautiful and dynamic remixes, and the changes really shine on early music from "Final Fantasy" through "Final Fantasy III." I've played every "Final Fantasy" except for the MMORPG versions, and it was a joy hearing all of this classic music retooled just enough for an HD audience. Some of these versions aren't familiar to me, and I own a lot of soundtracks.

The first "Theatrhythm" had familiar-sounding arrangements, and anyone who has previous "Final Fantasy" soundtracks probably already owned the songs. There's no soundtrack out (yet) for "Curtain Call" as far as I can tell, and that's a shame.
